MABC Launches BC Mining Month 2022
VANCOUVER, BC – May is BC Mining Month, announced the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) today, celebrating the significant contributions the mining industry makes in communities throughout the province, and the critical role it has in a low-carbon future. The government of BC is recognizing Mining Month with an official proclamation.
The theme of Mining Month 2022 is “Changing Mines, Changing Minds,” highlighting the industry’s commitment to continuous improvement and implementation of advanced technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve efficiency, reduce environmental impacts and enhance safety.
“B.C. Mining Month is an excellent opportunity to showcase the willingness of our industry to embrace change and innovation, whether that be social, environmental or technological,” said Michael Goehring, President and CEO of the MABC. “B.C. is a world-class mining jurisdiction that has stepped up to find new and better ways to produce metals and minerals, providing important benefits for the communities they operate in.”
“For more than 170 years mining has played a key role in the development and growth of British Columbia,” said Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation Bruce Ralston. “As we undergo the massive shift from reliance on fossil fuels to cleaner technology, B.C.’s mining industry will be critical to meeting the global demand for the raw metals and minerals needed to transition to a low-carbon future.”
The International Energy Agency predicts demand for metals and minerals will grow six-fold by 2040 to support the global energy transition required to meet Paris Agreement’s targets. B.C.’s sixteen mines and two smelters produce copper, aluminum, gold, silver, steelmaking coal and additional metals and minerals used to construct electric vehicles, wind turbines, solar farms, electricity transmission and other vital infrastructure.
BC mines create 35,000 jobs across the province with an average wage of $123,700. Mines spend an estimated $3 billion a year with 215 small, medium and Indigenous-affiliated business, and contribute up to $2.5 billion in annual revenue to all levels of government.
